The Institute of Education, under the auspices of the Director, Prof. (Mrs.) A.O. Imogie. University of Benin organized a one-day Seminar on Exercise and Individual Health. The venue was the Institute main hall at Ekewan Campus. The program began with the Nigerian and Uniben anthems.
The Chairman was the class representative of the current pgd class. He gave the opening speech thanking the Director of the Institute, Prof. (Mrs.) A.O. Imogie, for organizing the programme.
The Director of the Institute, Prof. (Mrs.) A.O. Imogie, gave her opening speech. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of exercise for everyone. She explained that there are many benefits associated with exercising regularly such as improved health, improved work performance, increase in happiness, reduction in the likelihood of hypertension, high blood pressure, etc.
The Director said that there need not be too much time spent doing exercise. One can take a little time each day to perform exercise on a daily basis. Then there was a demonstration exercise session which the members of the active sports committee set up for this purpose participated in. It was fun all the way as the audience saw how easy it was to perform exercises. There was also a background music playing as the exercise session went on. This made it more interesting.
The Second and final speaker at the seminar was Mr. Uwadiae. He gave a lecture on Physiology of Exercise. Mr. Uwadiae explained that exercising helps to reduce the cholesterol content of the body. This in turn helps to burn the fat stored up in the body. In his speech, he gave a lot of healthful benefits that comes from engaging in meaningful daily bits of exercise. Some of the benefits includes improved heart condition, improved blood pressure and reduction in obesity and excessive fat.
There was a session for questions. Several delegates in the audience asked questions while others made contributions. The Director was on hand to give adequate answers to all questions. Some of the responses revealed other aspects of proper exercising. For example; not eating food does not result in weight loss but rather starvation, exercise ahead of time before sleeping, pregnant women can do moderate exercise, patients with heat conditions should follow their doctors recommendation on exercise, and so on.
It was an informative seminar.
