The Centre for Gender Studies invites you to be a participant in the Third International Conference on Gender, with the theme, ‘Strengthening Policy Implementation in a Contemporary World’. The Conference will hold at the University of Benin, Benin-City, from September 4th to 8th, 2016. Participants are expected from different parts of the world.
The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, declared a few years ago that the fight for women’s rights is central to the UN’s global mission in view of the commitment of governments to equality and sustainable development for all countries. The Beijing Declaration was a major milestone on the road to women’s empowerment. It has guided policy making and inspired women and girls to strive for equality and opportunity, and reminded everyone that this is their human right.
In Nigeria, for example, while strong advocacy has ensured that women are part of, or benefit from, the budgeting process, the governance system, community empowerment, education, civil rights and overall development, the cold reception encountered by the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill recently at the National Assembly is a warning of the important barriers still on the path of gender equality in Nigeria. There is growing urgency for gender studies programmes and experts across the country to synergize constantly to share knowledge of and develop strategies for addressing social, cultural and political barriers to gender equity in Nigeria. It is for this reason that we hope that you would plan to attend this very important Conference.
We look forward to receiving your abstracts on the various sub – themes and benefitting from your vast experience on the subject matter. Please, find attached the conference’s e-flyer and e-poster with relevant information for you, your faculty and students.
