University of Benin Holds Her 194th Inaugural Lecture Series

The University of Benin 194th Inaugural Lecture was held at the Akin Deko auditorium. The event which was attended by a large section of the University community, kicked off with the Registrar Mrs O.G Oshodin introducing the Vice chancellors’ entourage. The Vice chancellors entourage was led by the Vice Chancellor himself Prof. F.F.O Orumwense FNSE, accompanied by other management staff of the University including; the Deputy Vice Chancellors, the Bursar, Provost College of medical sciences, Dean of Medicine, Dean of Students, Directors and senior Professors.The Vice Chancellor in his welcome address highlighted his commitment to the Inaugural Lecture series as echoed in the fact that this was the 46th Inaugural lecture under his tenure. This is also reflected-he continued- in the fact that this is the first Inaugural lecture from the Department of soil Microbiology. He proceeded to furnish the audience with his now customary update on activities within the University. The thanked all relevant arms of the University’s system, whilst soliciting the continued support of all stakeholder. In post-scribing the academic and professional accomplishment of the guest lecturer Prof. I.K. Ogboghodo, the numerous capacities which he has served, the Vice Chancellor highlighted the esteemed scholarly disposition of the guest lecturer. Prominent amongst which were the over 50 publications in the name of the guest lecturer in international and local publication, the guest lecturers’ association with a vast array of international bodies: including American Soil Science Association (ASSA), Nigeria Soil Science Association. The Vice Chancellor in concluding presented the guest lecturer to deliver his lecture.

 

The guest lecturer adopting graphical annotations did justice to the definition of the soil and its various material properties. The linkages with humans ability to milk ‘daily bread’ from exploring the soil was extensive covered. The various layers of soil and the components of organism that make up each layers of soil were equally discussed. The guest lecturer presented his research areas to include:

  • Nitrogenfication
  • Biological Nitrogenfication
  • Use of waste in fertilizing the soil

Each aspect of his research areas was broadened using graphical illustration and annotations. Result and outcomes were equally shared to the benefit of the attendees.

In concluding, the guest lecturer made several acknowledgements and thanked the Vice chancellor for providing him the opportunity to deliver his lecture.

The 194th Inaugural lecture winded-down with the Vice Chancellor decorating the guest lecturer to rapturous cheering.
