University of Benin held the 2025/2026 Matriculation Ceremony on Wednesday, 28 January 2026 at the Akin Deko Auditorium on campus. This event which marks the formal induction of newly admitted students into the institution’s academic community.•

In the Event, The Vice-Chancellor Professor Edoba B. Omoregie, SAN, delivered an inspiring address welcoming students into the university community, in his speech he welcomed the new undergraduate students into the University of Benin — one of Nigeria’s oldest and most respected universities. He reminded students that UNIBEN was established on 23 November 1970 and today stands as a first-generation institution committed to academic excellence and innovation.

The Vice Chancellor also acknowledged the hard work that brought students to this point, encouraging them to feel proud of gaining admission into a university with numerous faculties, specialized institutes and strong traditions of academic and community engagement.

Prof. Omoregie emphasized UNIBEN’s dedication to excellence in teaching, research, and community service. He highlighted the university’s world-class faculty and technology-driven learning environment, noting that students are joining a community that nurtures critical thinking, creativity, and practical skills.
He encouraged students to embrace the spirit of resilience, discipline, and curiosity — qualities that will be necessary for success in university life and beyond.

The Vice-Chancellor reiterated the university’s Five-Point Agenda, calling on freshers to align themselves with the institution’s goals, which include:
1) Strengthening academic programmes in line with national and global standards,
2) Enhancing capacity building and skills acquisition,
3) Improving welfare provisions,
4) Boosting campus infrastructure, and
5) Fostering harmonious relationships among students, staff, and the wider community.

He stressed that this agenda aims to position UNIBEN as an innovative and globally recognized institution — something every student can contribute to and benefit from during their time at the university.

Prof. Omoregie urged the matriculating students to uphold the values and regulations of the University of Benin and to be distinguished by good character, integrity, and service to society. His words reinforced the importance of not just intellectual growth, but personal development and ethical conduct as part of university life.

In his closing remarks, the VC congratulated the students and their families for reaching this milestone. He expressed optimism about the future achievements of the new students and encouraged them to seize the opportunities provided by their education at UNIBEN.
