The collaboration between the University of Benin and the Geneva-based European Organization for Nuclear Research has received a boost. This follows the acceptance of the University into the Compact Muon Solenoid(CMS) Experiment as an Associated Institute by the Board of CMS/CERN.

The induction project to commence the collaboration has been decided by CERN and UNIBEN team led by Mr. Martin Gastal and Prof. M.A. Bamikole respectively. The project titled: Development and Operation of CMS Online System Administration, features two PhD students of the Department of Computer Science currently undergoing preliminary training with one of them deployed to CERN for a 12 month training in Online System Administration involving a large cluster.

Discussions are also ongoing on the possibility of UNIBEN and CERN jointly instituting a Masters Programme in Online System Administration to produce specialised graduates for the job market.

These achievements have been made possible by the commitment of the Uniben Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, to the project and the unwavering support of the University’s Alumnus, Mrs Faith Fookes.

It is noteworthy that UNIBEN is the first University in Sub-Saharan Africa to be admitted into the Collaboration Board of CMS/CERN. This development has further enhanced the visibility of the Institution in the global arena.
