The event was held on the 26th of June 2018 at the Akin-Deko main Auditorium. Guests were already seated as at 9:30 to 9:50 am waiting for the kickoff of the event. Present at the event is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin who was represented by DVC Administration; Prof P.E Iribhogbe, DVC Academics; Prof J.O. Ehiorobo, Deputy Registrer, Prof. Owoidoho Udiofia, FMCPsch, Registrer National Postgraduate Medical college of Nigeria, Prof. Moji Christiana Adeyeye, PhD, FAAPS, FNAS, FNA, Pharm, and Director-General NAFDAC, represented by Pharm. Itua Esther, Past CMD UBTH; Dr. Mike Ibadin, Rep. of zonal Army commander, Deputy Corps Commander RS5, Benin City, Rep Federal Neurological Hospital, Rep. Commissioner of Police, Unit commander toll gate assistant corps commander, Unit corps commander, Deans of various faculties, The Dean of students, Dr. Eddie Erigbe (SAVAN), Director Health Services, Chairman NMA, Director ICT, All Saints Chapel Reps, Nigerian Army Supply and Medical Transport Center, Members of the Committee consult and Psychiatrist, Director Center for Gender Studies, Dr. Mike Omogberale, Director physical planning, Rep. As the Vice Chancellor came on stage to give the welcome address, the students applauded him. Immediately after that there was a brief citation on Prof. Uwoidoho Udiofia. The crowd marveled when told that the Prof. is a black belt holder of taekwando. He gave his lecture on the topic: Drug Abuse in Nigeria. He thereafter defined drugs as chemical substance when taken into the body influences it in various ways. He made note that minimal use of alcohol has no effect if monitored. He also noted that kolanuts when used the traditional way has no harm. The crowd was amazed when told that people smoke drippings from lizards, pit toilets and other unimaginable stuffs to get high. He described addiction of drugs as hunger for food. He talked on drugs mainly used in the country which includes cocaine. He talked on the solution in which Nigerian’s must learn the hard way and not to wait for government to proffer solutions. Thereafter a little play let by the Theatre and Media Arts students Ekehuan Campus was displayed. It was a very delightful presentation which gave them a standing ovation at the end of it.
The second lecture kicked off with a citation of the Director-General who was represented by Pharm. Itua Esther. She talked on the topic: The problems of drugs/substance abuse in the nation. She took her time to describe some of the causes which includes; money, peer-pressure, poverty and unemployment. She also described tramadol as the most abused drugs used by people. She also talked on codeine as another drug usually abused. She noted that Nigeria has the highest use of tramadol relating to our population. She thereby enlightened the guests on some preventive measure which includes; parental guidance, societal and governmental approaches should also be put in place. An interactive session was thereby held on the solutions for curbing drug abuse in the society. It thereafter came to the questions and answers section whereby trivial questions were asked and satisfactory answers were given. At the end of the event, Prof. Agbolagba gave the closing speech. It is indeed a new chapter to eradicating the abuse of drugs in the society.
