The 223rd lecture in the inaugural lecture series of the University of Benin was held recently at the Akin Deko Main Auditorium. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Kessington Osahenrunmwen Obahiagbon, a Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering.
The event commenced with an opening speech by the Chairman of the occasion, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Osasere Orumwense. The Vice Chancellor intimated the audience on the recent happenings in the university and charged the audience to pay undivided attention to the lecture as he assured the congregation of an impactful lecture.
Delivering his lecture, Prof. Obahiagbon whose work in Chemical Engineering has focused on how the battered environment around us can be engineered to become safe for man, animals and plants to survive in, spoke of how increase in population, urbanization and industrialization continue to affect our environment. The effects on the environment are harmful to human health.
The inaugural lecturer during his lecture showed that the deployment of renewable energy technologies will help achieve a safe and sustainable environment. He advocated for empowerment of environmental protection agencies and other relevant agencies in order for them to effectively discharge their duties. Prof. Obahiagbon also urged the government to enact policies to regulate the use of electrical generators and also implement the safe distance from residential buildings where generators can be located.
After the lecture, the Vice Chancellor decorated the lecturer with the inaugural lecture medal and ushered him into the Inaugural Lecturers’ Hall of Fame.
