The Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin presents an Award of Excellence to former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), in recognition of his outstanding contributions to national development and public service.
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) successfully held the grand launch of its historic ₦100 Billion Trust Development Fund on Saturday, 4th July, 2026, at the Akin Deko Auditorium, Ugbowo Campus, Benin City.
The landmark event brought together distinguished alumni, government officials, corporate leaders, development partners, philanthropists, staff, students, and friends of the University, all united by a shared commitment to securing the future of UNIBEN.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edoba Omoregie, described the initiative as a bold step toward financial sustainability, aimed at reducing dependence on government funding while accelerating infrastructure development, research excellence, innovation, digital transformation, and student welfare.
Representing the Federal Government, the Minister of Education commended the initiative as a model for sustainable university funding, emphasizing the importance of stronger alumni engagement, private sector partnerships, and innovative financing for higher education.
The launch recorded significant pledges, cash donations, and project commitments from alumni, corporate organisations, and development partners, marking a major milestone in the University’s journey toward becoming a globally competitive institution.
The Trust Development Fund will finance strategic projects, including modern student hostels, world-class research facilities, digital infrastructure, alternative energy solutions, entrepreneurship initiatives, and other transformative developments that will strengthen UNIBEN’s legacy for generations to come.
The grand launch concluded with renewed optimism, inspiring stakeholders to continue investing in the University’s vision of excellence, innovation, and sustainable development.
