A memorandum of understanding between the University of Benin and OpenBinacle Group, on the deployment of Artificial Intelligence to standardise and preserve Nigerian indigenous languages, has been birthed. The research activities cover a broad range of Artificial Intelligence Applications including Machine Translation, Machine Learning, Generative AI, Natural Language Processing (NLP) Deep Learning and Linguistics.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, expressed satisfaction with the development, emphasising that the administration welcomes initiatives that will project the University in global space and reckoning.
She reiterated that the University of Benin is a fertile ground for the germination of ideas and actions in diverse fields.
She commended the OpenBinacle Group for the choice of Uniben for the research partnership.
The OpenBinacle Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Emmanuel Gabriel,explained that the organisation has built major revolutionary technologies to bridge communication gaps inorder for citizens to overcome over 2000 African language barriers in fifty-four African countries and other parts of the world.
The latest AI cutting edge technology, he says, is expected to provide universal access to knowledge, communication and languages with Staff, Students and the University community as the first line of beneficiaries in research, education and training.
Young people between ages fifteen and twenty- four as well as unemployed youths are also expected to key into the initiative.
The Vice Chancellor was represented at the session by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Professor Ray Ozolua, while the Dean, Faculty of Arts and facilitator of the project, Professor Constantine Yuka, as well as the Ag. Director, legal unit of the University, Dr. Anthony Ewere, were also present.
